• Expanded facility will nearly triple treatment capacity
FREDERICK, MD, Feb. 7, 2008 -- Fru-Con Construction Corp.'s Eastern Regional Office, based in Woodbridge, Virginia, was recently awarded a $72.9 million contract to expand the existing New Design Road Water Treatment Plant located in Frederick County, Maryland. The project award was made by the Frederick County Division of Utilities and Solid Waste Management.
Fru-Con will construct new facilities that will nearly triple the existing treatment plant capacity from 8.8 to 25 million gallons a day (MGD). The expansion includes a pre-sedimentation basin, rapid mixers, three flocculation basins, three sedimentation basins, six filters, four filter effluent pumps, a UV disinfection system and a high service pump station. The project also entails modifications and upgrades to the existing sedimentation basins, rapid mix area and filters. A new backup power generation system will also be provided, according to Fru-Con Controller Ralf Fuchs and Senior Project Manager Joe Duffy.
Rummel, Klepper Kahl (RK) of Baltimore, Md. designed the project in association with New York City-based Hazen and Sawyer. RK has been providing engineering services throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions since 1923. Hazen and Sawyer focus on environmental engineering and design services, including water supply treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, and stormwater management.
