LONDON, ENGLAND, May 6, 2014 -- Aquiva Foundation, a global water charity organizaiton, has partnered with Soneva Fushi, a resort and spa in the Maldives, to implement an innovative seawater desalination system that boosts the efficiency of energy creation while at the same time desalinating water in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Supplied by memsys, the technology allows for harvesting heat to drive desalination. By doing so, it improves on the cooling of solar cells and generators enhancing efficiency. The technology from memsys is based on vacuum-driven multi-effect membrane distillation (V-MEMD), a highly efficient thermal separation process in a compact, modular concept.

The Soneva Fushi plant is expected to deliver a minimum of 100 cubic meters per day of pure distilled water that will be mineralized using local coral minerals for a good Maldivian taste.

"We are very proud to be able to realize this project with Soneva Fushi, which is constantly on the very forefront of the combination of environmental excellence and effortless luxury," said Florian Bollen, CEO of Aquiva Foundation. "The integrated approach of power generation and water desalination does provide new perspectives for water provision bridging from the most sophisticated environments to underprivileged communities."

About Aquiva Foundation

The goal of the Aquiva Foundation is to provide people in developing countries with the tools needed to create long-term sustainable answers to their water needs. It is the first charity to focus on sustainable desalination of sea water and saline groundwater to avoid depletion of existing water sources. Aquiva employs a micro-finance approach, providing the technology, training and support needed to generate safe water for personal, industrial and agricultural use.
