VILLE ST-LAURENT, PQ, Canada, Jan. 20, 2009 -- John Meunier Inc., subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, is pleased to announce that it sold a second OS-LP screen for the City of Newark (NJ), USA.
CSO tradition within John Meunier Inc.
John Meunier Inc. started selling CSO (Combined Sewer Overflow) screens in 1981 with the introduction of the ROTARC SOS screens. This technology was shortly followed by the introduction of the much larger VO screen, a vertical unit protecting emergency weirs in deep facilities. The need for novel screening technologies growing, John Meunier Inc. invested in a 5-year R&D program aimed at developing new approaches and innovative solutions for CSOs, SSOs and Stormwater. Further to development with the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, the optimized hydraulics of the OS-LP were developed and patented by John Meunier Inc. The addition of this screen completes John Meunier Inc.'s arsenal of HYDROVEX® and other wet weather technologies.
The Newark (NJ) Herbert Place and Verona Avenue Overflow Stations
Screening remains a key solution for CSO and SSO applications and is part of the EPA's Nine Minimum Controls for CSOs. "After exhaustive engineering studies, exploring multiple screening technologies for these two overflow points," explains Kurt Emmerich, Associate at Malcolm Pirnie Inc., "the OS-LP screen was selected for its high linear overflow capacity (maximum capacity of OS-LP is 13 CFS/ft) compared to the small installed footprint." The optimized hydraulics created by the upstream hydraulic ramp maintains a maximum output while the screen position eliminates any headloss caused by screening accumulation on the bars. The screenings are evacuated from the main flow and sluiced in a collecting trough back to the sewer line downstream from the overflow chamber.
The OS-LP was a perfect fit for the Newark application, facing the very limited freeboard available. Depending on the actual site requirements, John Meunier Inc. can rely on a vast array of screening technologies. "Our offer screens ranges from static, non clogging units to automatic, high performance perforated screen designs," indicates Martin Couture, Equipment Manager for John Meunier Inc.
Local manufacturer, Global outreach
Also, throughout the history of the company, John Meunier Inc. has been manufacturing and assembling its state-of-the art Wet Weather technologies (Screens, vortex flow regulators, sediment flushing tanks, Vortex Separation, etc.) in Canada, in its 50,000 ft2 production shop, in Ville St-Laurent.
