MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, USA, Nov. 5, 2009 -- Al Salem Johnson Controls JV, a joint venture partner of Johnson Controls' Building Efficiency business in Saudi Arabia, was awarded an $87 million project to supply energy-efficient chillers at Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University, currently being built in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After installation, the chillers are estimated to save a significant amount of energy and water supporting the university's mission of sustainable development.
Al Salem Johnson Controls JV will supply 26 YORK® brand chillers to the university. The chillers are dual compressor centrifugal chillers with a closed loop condenser cooling water circuit. Being radiator cooled, the chillers will save more than 2,100 gallons of water per minute of chiller operation in addition to saving energy that would be required to treat that water.
The chillers use HydroFluoroCarbon (HFC)-134A refrigerant which does not contribute to ozone depletion. Collectively, the chillers are capable of cooling capacity of 58,000 tons of refrigeration, which is equivalent to the cooling required for about 20,000 single-family homes.
"This is an important opportunity to support the university's mission of sustainable development by installing solutions like these energy efficient YORK chillers," said Magdy Mekky, vice president and managing director, Middle East for Johnson Controls. "We are proud to be working with the university and are impressed with their commitment to sustainable energy."
The Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University is dedicated to the empowerment of women. It is one of the largest universities in the Middle East and will offer courses in subjects as diverse as nanotechnology, bio-sciences, information technology, medicine, dentistry, nursing, naturopathy, languages, translation and pharmacy. The university's design is environmentally friendly and the campus will include an administration building, a central library, conference centers, buildings for 15 academic facilities, several laboratories and a state-of-the-art, 700-bed hospital.
