July 21, 2009 -- To engage people in thinking about how they use their water, Shawn Coles, founder of Water Saving Week Sponsored by Roca, has developed the UK's first freely available online 'Water Footprint' calculator.
The shocking truth is we each use about 4645 liters per day, that's the same as 50 baths of water. Water is embedded in the products that we drink and consume and it is this much higher figure that gives us our water footprint.
We each, on average, use 3400 liters through agricultural crops, 1095 liters through manufactured products and 150 liters in the home.
It takes 70 liters of water to produce just one apple, 140 liters to produce one cup of coffee, 2700 liters to produce one cotton shirt and a staggering 15,500 liters to produce 1kg of beef.
This 'embedded' water all contributes to your water footprint that works on a similar basis to the more widely known carbon footprint.
