How big is your water footprint? The average amount of water consumed per person per day in the UK is about 150 liters and in London this rises to 168 liters. However, these figures are not a true representation of our water usage as they represent how much clean drinking water we use via taps, toilets, bathing and using the washing machine for example.

The shocking truth is we each use about 4645 liters per day, that's the same as 50 baths of water. Water is embedded in the products that we drink and consume and it is this much higher figure that gives us our water footprint.

We each, on average, use 3400 liters through agricultural crops, 1095 liters through manufactured products and 150 liters in the home.

It takes 70 liters of water to produce just one apple, 140 liters to produce one cup of coffee, 2700 liters to produce one cotton shirt and a staggering 15,500 liters to produce 1kg of beef.

This 'embedded' water all contributes to your water footprint that works on a similar basis to the more widely known carbon footprint.
