• Clean water technology in gas turbinepower plant
CELLE, Germany, Dec. 15, 2008 -- The water technology company Berkefeld, part of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, delivered a water treatment plant for a new gas turbine power plant being built in Algeria by Alstom. Supplied were a full-desalination installation with an output of 320 m³/h and a drinking and service water treatment plant that produces 3 m³/h of pure water. The start-up is planned for spring 2009. Alstom is building the power plant in Relizane, a province in the Northwest of the country.
The full-desalination plant consists of a pre-treatment system with multi-layer filters, a two-lane reverse osmosis capable of 165 m³/h each, and a mixed media filtration unit with regeneration station. The water produced must maintain a conductivity 0.5 µS/cm. An absolute special feature of the plant is that it is projected for an operation of only six days per year. The treatment plant will only be started when the power plant switches from gas to diesel operation in order to cover the ensuing need for water. The long standstill times present an exceptional challenge with regard to preservation as well as starting and stopping the system, because the plant must at all times guarantee a sure operating start.
Water stored intermediately is circulated continually between the storage containers and treated by means of UV units to avoid contamination.
The drinking and service water treatment plant consists largely of Berkefeld system components. These include the reverse osmosis units maxiRO and midiRO and electric deionisation, which were adapted to the special requirements and operating conditions in order to form an extremely compact solution. The plant not only has a permeation output that is enough to fulfil the need for service and drinking water in the power plant, but also saves energy and space.
Berkefeld belongs to Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. At the sites in Germany, more than 450 employees plan, develop and care for projects for water and wastewater treatment. Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (VWS), a subsidiary of Veolia Water, is one of the leading suppliers of technical solutions for treating water and wastewater. With more than 7,700 employees in 55 countries, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies in 2007 achieved a turnover of €2.1 billion in 2007.
