PASADENA, CA, Aug. 24, 2006 -- Parsons was selected by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County to prepare a feasibility study and perform preliminary engineering for a new tunnel and ocean outfall. The Districts are evaluating the feasibility of a new tunnel and ocean outfall in the context of a comprehensive master facilities plan to cover its Joint Outfall System, which serves a large portion of metropolitan Los Angeles County. This new tunnel and ocean outfall would be one of the world's largest and would provide improved reliability and operational capability.

During the feasibility phase and concurrent with public outreach efforts by the Districts, a team of Parsons and Districts engineers will evaluate several onshore and offshore alignments and potential diffuser locations. Following selection of the preferred alternative, Parsons will perform the preliminary design.

"We look forward to working with the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County on this important project," states Richard Trembath, Parsons senior vice president. "This new tunnel and ocean outfall is an exciting project from a technical point of view and will provide redundancy for the existing system and long-term safe disposal of treated wastewater from the Districts' service area."

The new tunnel and ocean outfall will begin at the Districts' existing 400 MGD Joint Water Pollution Control Plant with an onshore shaft(s) and tunnel. Offshore it will involve either a tunnel, combination conventional outfall and tunnel, or a conventional outfall. The final diffuser location will be determined using state-of-the-art 3D modeling to evaluate the optimum receiving water location.
