NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 1, 2006 -- Louisiana leaders, cub scouts and a swamp boat captain will join the America's WETLAND: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana to launch the new America's WETLAND Online Resource Center (www.americaswetlandresources.com) on Thursday, World Wetlands Day, Feb. 2, at the Loyola University.
Launched in partnership with America's WETLAND, the new online center will serve as a major source of information on Louisiana's coastal wetlands. Along with facts, figures and FAQs about the state's coastal land loss -- the site also provides the first-ever certification program for tour guides and swamp boat captains, which will ensure that the thousands of visitors will receive the most accurate and up-to-date information available. In addition, the site includes a special section for youth groups, including younger and older scouts, that provides guidelines and study requirements about America's WETLAND. Once the required activities are completed, the kids will be awarded an America's WETLAND patch for their uniform, backpack or favorite jacket.
Expected to be present for the event are: R. King Milling, Chair, America's WETLAND Foundation; Sidney Coffee, Chair, Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority; Dr. Robert Thomas, Director, Center for Environmental Communications, Loyola University; Steve Mathies, VP and Louisiana Operations Manager, CH2MHILL; Capt. Tom Billiott, Westwego Swamp Adventures; Dan Blasius, Council Program Director, Southeast Louisiana Council, BSA; and members of Cub Scout Pack 55, Holy Name School headed by pack leader Greg Waguespack.
The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Loyola's Monroe Library.
