SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 25, 2010 -- Electronics company LG Electronics (LG) has launched its first wastewater treatment solution - the Green Membrane Bioreactor (G-MBR) process - only two months after entering the water treatment industry.

The company said its MBR process requires 34% less space than conventional MBR systems, which it attributes to "slimmer flat-type microfiltration membrane modules and optimizing the space inbetween".

It said that debris screening technology enables the G-MBR to be "highly resistant to contamination and fouling".

Two months ago the company said it would be investing more than USD400 million over the next decade to enter the water treatment market and develop an advanced membrane filtration system (see Water & Wastewater International Story).

The company set out the aim to generate USD 7 billion in revenue by 2020 and in the process become a top 10 global water treatment company.

Young-ha Lee, president and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company, said: “The lack of clean water is a major cause of hunger, disease and poverty throughout the developing world. And the problem will only get worse if the warnings about climate change turn out to be accurate. With G-MBR, LG has taken a huge step in making affordable clean water a reality for millions of people around the world."
