NIJMEGEN, Netherlands, Sept. 24, 2010 -- Royal Haskoning and its partners Deltares and DHV have acquired a frontrunner project in a series of Dutch-Vietnamese initiatives to improve flood control in the Mekong Delta. "It is exciting that with this project we are embarking on a long term relationship with Vietnam in the field of integrated water management to the benefit of a city with seven million inhabitants," says Divisional Director of Water, René Noppeney.

This first project aims at reducing flooding in and around Ho Chi Minh City. The approach is truly multidisciplinary. Our technological knowledge will be applied and transferred but institutional aspects, management capabilities and environmental aspects are considered equally important.

The project team will develop partnerships and identify funding sources for the implementation of future projects and strengthen the technical and management capabilities of relevant Vietnamese agencies. The project team will also promote partnerships between Dutch and Vietnamese educational, scientific, water and environmental institutions and between governmental and non governmental organizations in the field of water management. Moreover it will investigate opportunities for collaboration under ongoing programs for the exchange of knowledge and experiences on delta technology, climate change and water management.

The project -- with a contract value of two million Euros -- is funded by both the Dutch and the Vietnamese governments. Royal Haskoning will act as the lead partner of the project's consortium. The contract between Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the consortium has been signed on 16 September in Ho Chi Minh City.
