DALLAS, TX, June 24, 2010 -- A transportable Wastewater Treatment and Effluent Recycling System, made by Global Water Group Inc. (Dallas, TX, USA), has been selected by the U.S. Air Force for five bases in Afghanistan.
Each unit is capable of processing 20,000 gallons per day and meeting the needs of 400 personnel. The systems will handle all the wastewater processing for each base. Each two-part system will be shipped in two 20-ft containers and networked together on-site, according to Alan M. Weiss, president/CEO of Global Water Group.
"This is the 'greenest' most environmentally correct wastewater treatment system ever made and the model for future military systems," Weiss said.
The Air Force plans to use the recycled water for maintenance and irrigation, but the recycled water will exceed WHO and EPA potable drinking standards (including NSF-Standard 53), Weiss said.
"Global Water's system is modular and easily scalable. This same modular, environmentally correct model can work for municipal systems, as well," said Weiss.
More than 30 years ago, oil and gas industry biologists developed an aerobic biological treatment referred to as "extended aeration - activated sludge" where air flow and bacteria digested sewer sludge, Weiss explained.
"You don't find sludge fields on a drilling barge in the Caspian Sea," he noted.
The effluent from the Global Water wastewater treatment unit flows into the recycling component, which removes remaining suspended solids down to 5-microns and recycles those suspended solids back to the digestive process of the wastewater treatment. All remaining effluent is processed through Global's LS3 water purification component which removes all parasites and hazardous chemicals, and with ultra-violet light, kills or neutralizes the bacteria (e-coli) and viruses.
This process produces highly purified water suitable for any potable or non-potable use. These self-contained systems require minimal maintenance and technical support, Weiss added.
