STL has been working on the construction of the laboratory after it secured a 10-year contract in early 2009 to deliver water and wastewater analytical services to Yorkshire Water Services.
In March STL received UKAS accreditation for the laboratory and on April 1 received their first samples from Yorkshire Water.
It is hoped the Wakefield laboratory will provide a range of water and wastewater testing for companies throughout the North East of England as well as services to Yorkshire Water.
The laboratory will form a network with STL’s two existing water laboratories, in Coventry and Bridgend, and will also act as a hub where samples can be brought to be tested, or transported to the most appropriate STL laboratory.
According to STL, the Wakefield laboratory will be able to handle in excess of quarter of a million samples a year.
Rachel Henton, managing director of STL, said: “This will be a real flagship base for us, and will give us three full size laboratories for testing water quality.”
