Brackish water reverse osmosis system allows city to serve growing areas in Phoenix suburb.

WILMINGTON, MA, Jan. 26, 2007 -- Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. (KMS), a world-class developer and manufacturer of high quality membranes and membrane systems, has been selected to provide reverse osmosis (RO) equipment to the city of Goodyear, Ariz. Separation Process Inc., the city's consultant, chose the 18-inch diameter MegaMagnum® spiral element from KMS as the backbone of a 0.5 MGD brackish water RO system. The system will allow for increased city growth beyond what the city's infrastructure can currently accommodate.

To supply potable water to growing areas, Goodyear plans to transport the MegaMagnum system to outlying sites closer to the well-heads. The system will operate as a swing-unit so it can be moved to other locations as necessary.

Scheduled to begin this spring, the project is the first full-scale municipal installation of a MegaMagnum system in North America.

"The innovative design of the MegaMagnum element provided the city with significant additional treatment capacity in a system that has a much smaller footprint and increased flexibility over an eight-inch element system," said KMS municipal sales director Alden Whitney. "KMS has produced thousands of large-diameter elements, and we're excited to see the concept is gaining acceptance in the municipal market."

Designed to significantly reduce the installation cost of large and medium-scale reverse osmosis and nanofiltration (NF) systems, the MegaMagnum element features an unprecedented capacity that comes from its unique 18-inch diameter and 61-inch length. The MegaMagnum RO spiral elements are used for desalination of brackish water and water reuse while the NF elements can be used for softening or organics removal in drinking water supplies.

Since Goodyear plans to move the system and produce potable water, maximizing the amount of water that can be produced by a transportable system is critical. The MegaMagnum element pressure vessel's footprint is about 50% of that for an eight-inch element rack, which allows Goodyear to reduce the transportation and civil costs associated with the project substantially. The Goodyear system will operate at a 150 psi (10.3 bar) feed pressure.
