Hydranautics selected for new 17-mgd Escombreras, Spain, desalination plant
• Hydranautics was chosen to provide over 5,000 seawater desalination membranes, putting integrated membrane solutions at work in southern Spain
OCEANSIDE, CA, Jan. 4, 2007 -- Southern Spain's changing politics and desperate need for potable water have made that region's push for desalination solutions more urgent than ever. Ente Público del Agua, the local entity overseeing the port town on Escombreras, played an integral part in the development of the new 17 mgd (64,000 m3/d) seawater desalination plant being built in the city to help meet the region's water needs. Over 5,000 Nitto Denko/Hydranautics' seawater reverse osmosis elements have been chosen for the plant, 3,150 SWC4+ and 1,890 SWC5.
Selected by a partnering triad of Grupo ACS, Grupo Cobra and Tedagua, Hydranautics' 400 square foot SWC4+ and SWC5 elements will be used together in a single-pass hybrid design to satisfy requirements of boron <1.00ppm and quality <400 TDS. The plant, a 25-year Build-Own-Operate (BOO) project, is scheduled to go live in the spring of 2007.
Used together at Escombreras as part of our Integrated Membrane Solution® (IMS), Nitto Denko/Hydranautics' SWC4+ provides 7,000 gallons per day (gpd), at 99.8% nominal salt rejection and 99.7% minimum salt rejection. The SWC5 provides 9,000 GPD at 99.8% nominal salt rejection and high boron rejection.
