• Doosan teams with Energy Recovery Inc. to alleviate water shortages and improve affordability in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
TAMPA, FL, Sept. 5, 2007 -- Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction was awarded Al Shuaibah III Expansion RO Project. Doosan Hydro Technology, US based subsidiary, will provide the engineering and design specifications for pretreatment, RO, neutralization, chemical feed and CIP systems. The project owned by Arabian Company for Water & Power Projects, Ltd. (Acwa Power), will provide additional water for services and operation of the pre-existing power plant.
Al Shuaibah III Expansion SWRO Desalination Plant was developed in response to Jeddah's growing water shortage. The new plant will be built adjacent to the pre-existing 880,000 m³/d (232.5 MGD) MSF facility, and the two plants will share an outfall and an access road.
The project, Doosan Hydro Technology's first large-scale RO plant in the Middle East, is using Energy Recovery Inc.'s (ERI) PX® modular energy recovery technology for the overall RO process design. After carefully considering virtually every energy recovery device technology option, Doosan Hydro Technology selected PX-220 devices for the 150,000 m³/d (39.6 MGD) plant. This was due to their successful track record, advanced design and unequalled high efficiency, as well as ERI's reputation for superior regional technical service and support.
In satisfying the customer's environmental demands for high efficiency pumps, high performance membranes and low energy operation, Al Shuaibah III plant will serve as an important milestone for seawater desalination. It will pave the way for future RO desalination development in the region. The deal, also ERI's first mega-scale desalination plant in the Gulf Region, is a major win for both companies. ERI has regional sales and technical support presence in Riyadh and Dubai.
Ali Kalantar, Doosan Hydro Technology CEO, said "We are delighted to have been selected for this important fast track project. DHIC's EPC capabilities along with Doosan Hydro Technology's strong process engineering experience were the determining factors for WEC and the developer. ERI's PX® technology offered the most efficient energy recovery solution for the project."
Borja Blanco, ERI VP, Large Projects Group, said "This project solidifies ERI's presence in the Gulf Region with a clear message from EPC contractors that PX® Technology makes sense if saving energy and providing affordable water to the population is the goal, regardless of energy prices."
This has been a successful year for Doosan Hydro Technology. Being awarded Al Shuaibah III Expansion RO Project, along with the success of other projects, proves that Doosan Hydro Technology upholds its global reputation for providing design, manufacturing and construction of custom engineered water and waste water treatment plants. Al Shuaibah III plant is scheduled for completion by December, 2008.
Doosan Hydro Technology has a global reputation for providing design, manufacturing and construction of custom engineered water and wastewater treatment plants, including water re-use and zero liquid discharge.
