Sept. 12, 2007 -- Mott MacDonald has been appointed by King Abdullah Research & Consulting to conduct a study into water demand and resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Due to its growing population, Saudi Arabia's demand for water is increasing. This new study will help to ensure that higher levels of demand can be met as well as inform plans for new desalination plants which is of particular importance as most of the plants commissioned in the 1980s are about to de-commissioned as they reach the end of their productive life.

The study, due for completion by the end of this year, will provide data to help determine planning of new desalination plants and the co-generation of power for the entire Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the next 25 years.

Mott MacDonald's project manager Sarkar Soumenkumar said, "We are delighted that King Abdullah Research & Consulting has selected Mott MacDonald for this prestigious study. Providing recommendations for planning will give us a real opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in desalination and water infrastructure planning."

"A particular challenge will be adapting plans for water generation and replacement of existing plant in an environment where due to low density in population, it is difficult to provide water transmission at a cost that is economically viable. However as leading water and energy consultants in the Middle East, we are able to provide the benefit and insight of our world class experience."
