• Work is central to the $507 million Mozambique MCC Compact for water and sanitation, transportation, land access, and farming
MAPUTO, Mozambique, Sept. 17, 2007 -- CDM has received an additional 1-year contract with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) for engineering consulting services in Mozambique. Following on project assessment and due diligence work performed by CDM earlier this year, the government of Mozambique and the MCC recently signed a 5-year, $507 million compact that seeks to stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty in the country's northern region. MCC is the innovative U.S. government-based funding organization under the Millennium Challenge Account that aims to reduce poverty through economic growth.
Under this newest phase of the program, CDM will provide independent engineering consulting services in the water, sanitation, and roads sectors for implementation oversight of the compact.
The water supply and sanitation project is expected to assist some 1.9 million Mozambicans by 2015 through improved water systems, wastewater disposal, and stormwater drainage, while the transportation project is projected to improve access to markets and services for nearly 2.3 million citizens by 2015.
During an initial year-long implementation phase, CDM will provide technical advice, perform project monitoring and supervision, and liaise with the government of Mozambique on technical issues. CDM will also review the terms of reference for contract procurement, help track reform activities, check for compliance with environmental and resettlement guidelines, and prepare progress reports.
The Mozambique MCC Compact aims to increase the productive capacity of the population in selected northern districts, with the intended impact of reducing poverty, increasing household income and employment, and reducing chronic malnutrition. In particular, the interventions are designed to foster investment and increase economic opportunities for the 10 million Mozambicans living in the North, which has economical potential but has lagged behind other areas. The country has experienced one of the fastest growth rates in Africa, averaging 8 percent per year over the last decade.
CDM is a consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm delivering exceptional service to public and private clients worldwide.
