MWC to build country's first combined sewage-drainage plant
PASIQ CITY, Philippines, Sept. 22, 2007 -- Manila Water Company (MWC) will soon start construction of the Pineda-Kapitolyo Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Pasig City, the first system in the Philippines that can treat and process sewage and drainage water.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the latest STP project of Manila Water which is designed to treat sewage and storm flows of up to 4,000 cubic meters per day before discharging to the Pasig river.
The Pasig-Kapitolyo STP is one of three initiatives under the Riverbanks Sewerage System component of the Manila Third Sewerage Project whose goal is to rehabilitate the Pasig River, restore water quality, promote urban renewal along the riverbanks, and control wastewater discharges.
The project will be constructed at a cost of P88 million under the World Bank-assisted loan. Around 18,000 residents of Barangays Pineda and Kapitolyo will benefit from the project.
Pasig City Mayor Bobby Eusebio, Rep. Roman Romulo, Councilor Santiago, National Water Resources Board Executive Director Ramon Alikpala, Laguna Lake Development Authority OIC Alicia Bongco, Manila Water Operations Group Director Frank Beaumont, San Juan-Mandaluyong area business manager Allan Patdu and Wastewater Department Manager Evangelina R. Matibag led the groundbreaking ceremony. Aside from the groundbreaking, Mayor Eusebio also presented Manila Water with Pasig City's "Best in Corporate Social Responsibility in the Environment" award.
