NASHVILLE, TN, May 30, 2007 -- Bob Alley, founder and chairman of the board of E. Roberts Alley & Associates Inc., has written the Water Quality Control Handbook, 2nd edition, published under WEFPress™, a joint publishing alliance between McGraw-Hill Professional and the Water Environment Federation (WEF).

This is the only book that combines textbook design, theory and implementation with a wastewater treatment design handbook. The textbook portion describes the theory, design formulas, schematics and practical design hints for all types of physical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment. The handbook portion contains hydraulic information, including water and air pipe sizing and weir and flume sizing, conversion data, water characteristics, chemical characteristics including corrosion resistance, design information including piping dimensions, tank drainage and economy, and a list of EPA sampling and analytical methods for testing physical, chemical and biological pollutants.

The book is an excellent practical textbook for any environmental course in wastewater treatment in the Environmental, Civil Engineering or Environmental Science department at any university. It also provides the environmental practitioner with a useful and practical handbook. More information, including where to purchase the book, can be found at www.mhprofessional.com and www.wef.org/Marketplace.

This is the second edition of the Water Quality Control Handbook. Alley authored the first edition, which was published in 2000. The second edition introduces and explains new technologies, as well as updates and elaborates on information provided in the first edition.

As in the first edition, the newly published Water Quality Control Handbook recommends tools to the environmental practitioner to design systems that will protect the environment on a case-by-case basis. The second edition also expands on wastewater treatment solutions, providing a tool for wastewater professionals to screen and select the optimal treatment systems for various pollutant removals.

"Water quality control has always been a public health issue, but is increasingly becoming a global issue now that environmental protection is a concern for nations around the world. As stewards of our environment, we are responsible for its protection -- for our own sakes and for future generations," said Alley. "Sustainable growth of our civilization requires coexistence with nature. Fortunately, nature is forgiving and has a remarkable capacity for recovery with proper treatment. This book provides practical information and suggestions for the environmental practitioner to design effective water quality control systems."

Alley's combination of experience in education and practical work on successful engineering projects makes him uniquely qualified to author this handbook on water quality. Alley has taught a series of courses in both air quality control and wastewater pollution control at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and at George Washington University's Continuing Engineering Education Program in Washington, D.C., San Diego, Calif., Indian Head, Md., and London, England. In addition, Alley has taught at the Centre for Management Technology in Singapore, Jakarta, Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After the success of the Air Quality Control Handbook, published in English in 1998 and in Spanish in 2001, McGraw-Hill Professional asked Alley to write the first edition of the Water Quality Control Handbook.
