HAMPSHIRE, UK, June 20, 2007 -- A selection of pipework from Durapipe UK is being installed as part of a major refurbishment of Thames Water's waste treatment plant in Alton, Hampshire.

The plant is undergoing a general refurbishment, as part of Thames Water's regular maintenance program, which involves the replacement of all current equipment used to run the plant. 10" Durapipe ABS pipework has been specified for the plant's 10 distribution pipes, which are used to continually spray effluent over the biological filter beds to treat the sewage to within consent levels before discharging to the watercourse.

Installed by Tuke and Bell, leaders in the design and manufacture of sewage purification equipment, Durapipe ABS was selected due to its high performance qualities including its lightweight and corrosion free properties, as well as its robust nature, which prolongs the lifespan of the product and reduces maintenance and replacement costs.

Ongoing maintenance needs were an important consideration for the plant as Thames Water undertakes refurbishments of this filter plant every 20 years and so it is important to install products that will retain their performance capabilities over this time period, as well as limit maintenance and replacement requirements. As a result, Durapipe ABS was the ideal choice as it boasts a 50-year service life and its non-corrodible and robust properties means it is a low maintenance solution.

Commenting on the project, Darren Brighton of Tuke and Bell said: "We typically use steel and galvanized pipework products within our systems, but for this project Durapipe ABS was the most appropriate solution due to its lightweight material and maintenance free qualities."

"Due to weight restrictions with this system at Thames Water, we needed a pipework system which is extremely lightweight and so combining all the benefits it can offer, Durapipe ABS was the ideal choice for this project."

Durapipe ABS offers superior advantages for the transportation of low temperature fluids including tough and durable properties, lightweight material and wide operational temperature range, making it the ideal system for many industrial applications.
