PORTLAND, ME, June 29, 2007 -- Hydro International has won a €2 million contract to supply bespoke Combined Sewer Overflow technology for a major clean-up program in the Meuse valley in Belgium. The project will support SPGE, the regional Water Authority and INASEP, the local public body, in meeting the 2015 EU Framework Directive water quality targets.

Hydro is an international leader in hydrodynamic vortex technology for stormwater and wastewater management and the contract marks a significant milestone in the progress of its Ely-based Wastewater division since its acquisition of Vexamus 18 months ago. It is Hydro's first ever £1million-plus contract in continental Europe.

Chris Williams, Managing Director, Europe, said: "The Hydro team has been working with our Belgian partners for nine years to develop the right solution for INASEP. The contract is strong confirmation of the capability of our unique vortex separation technology to meet the requirements of European water and environmental authorities."

The three-year project is centered on the city of Namur, the capital of the Southern region of Wallonia at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. Hydro developed a bespoke solution based on 37 combined sewer overflows and screen separators, all using Hydro's unique hydrodynamic vortex separation technology.

Hydro's Group Products Manager Keith Hutchings commented: "The use of our unique, self-cleaning, non-powered screen and vortex separation technology with associated low maintenance and low energy requirements were key factors in being awarded the contract.

"We worked closely with the client to develop the technology to meet the site requirements. As the topography is very flat, loss of head and low flow were particular challenges. We were able to adapt the CSO design to include a low power pump in order to maintain an adequate flow. We also included a facility to add flocculation treatment at a later date so that increasing demands for water quality could be met in the future."

In total, 37 adapted Storm King® Overflow with Swirl-Cleanse™ Screens and a Grit King® Separator for treatment plant protection are being supplied. As part of the contract, the main contractor CFE EcoTech (Belgium) will undertake partial fabrication of the units, under license; key component manufacture has been retained by Hydro.

Hydro's Storm King® Overflow with Swirl-Cleanse™ Screen is an advanced hydrodynamic vortex separator that removes sediments, settleable solids and associated pollutants, and incorporates a self-cleansing screening device to remove floatables and gross solids. The Grit King® Separator is an advanced hydrodynamic grit separator and an economical choice for new or existing municipal or industrial wastewater applications.

Hydro International is a leader in high performance, minimal maintenance and low lifetime cost technology for public and industrial waste water and sewage treatment works.
