LONG BEACH, CA, June 25, 2007 -- Global engineering company Earth Tech has designed and built a water treatment plant that will serve 3.7 million people in Tianjin, China. The new Tianjin Jie Yuan water treatment plant was officially opened this month after four years of design, construction and commissioning. Earth Tech designed, built and financed of the plant and will act as the plant's operator.
The plant has a capacity of 500 million liters of water a day -- an increase from the old plant's capacity of 300 million liters of water a day. It produces high quality drinking water that exceeds Chinese water quality standards.
Alan Krusi, President of Earth Tech, says: "Earth Tech is very proud of its partnership with the Tianjin Water Works Company (TWWC) and what we have accomplished. Together with TWWC, we have leveraged our integrated design-build-finance-operate solution and our experience in the global water and wastewater industry to deliver a world-class facility that will be a vital source of water for Tianjin for another 100 years."
At 104 years old, the Tianjin Jie Yuan facility is the oldest of three water treatment plants serving the 3.7 million residents of the central Tianjin area.
The financing for the renovation was approximately 216 million RMB (£14.2 million) and was provided by Tyco Asia Investments Limited (Tyco International is Earth Tech's parent company).
The existing Tianjin Jie Yuan Plant had no room to expand so the builders faced the challenge of demolishing parts of the old facility while building the new infrastructure while keeping the plant fully operational. It successfully met this challenge without any worker accidents and was rewarded with the Tianjin Construction Site award. Additionally, the project has been nominated for the Hai He River Cup, the award for the best project in the municipality.
"China has made a priority of welcoming foreign investment in the development of the water and wastewater industry and Earth Tech is committed to being a strong partner in that development. Through the use of Earth Tech's world-leading technologies and processes, the renovated Tianjin Jie Yuan water treatment plant is an excellent model for other Chinese cities and regions as they look to address their water challenges in an efficient and cost-effective manner," added Krusi.
The plant was officially opened by Chen Zhifeng, Vice Mayor of Tianjin, Chen Binglin, President of Tianjin Water Works Company and Alan Krusi, President of Earth Tech.
