Wastewater nutrient recovery solution for South Davis Sewer District
Huntsville Utilities upgrades water distribution network with new SCADA
Advanced metering to help reduce water losses in Brazil

The Water Research Foundation has developed resources to help water and wastewater utilities utilize social media to engage with their customers.

The project, Social Media for Water Utilities (WRF project #4638), explores the business case for utilities and board members to invest in, and engage their customers through, social media.

The project offers clear, practical guidance on how utilities can integrate social media engagement into their day-to-day operations and provides resources and templates that staff can customize and use at any time.

As part of a $24 million plant upgrade, the South Davis Sewer District in West Bountiful, Utah, will implement Advanced Biological Nutrient Recovery -- or ABNR -- technology at its 4 MGD South Plant.

The technology, from CLEARAS Water Recovery, leverages the relationship between biological and mechanical processes to achieve nutrient removal, recovering both phosphorus and nitrogen to near non-detect levels.

The system is expected to be operational in 14 months.

The South Davis treatment facility upgrade also includes the construction of a food waste to energy process, which will produce 2,500 decatherms of renewable natural gas.

As part of its biggest upgrade in 30 years, Huntsville Utilities has deployed a new supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for its water, electric, and gas systems as part of a multi-year plan to modernize its distribution networks.

The municipal utility has approximately 180,000 electricity customers, 51,000 gas customers, and 93,000 water customers, and the new SurvalentONE SCADA system from Survalent will help Huntsville Utilities maximize operational efficiency with a single control system.

The SCADA changeover took about 6 months to complete, and already the utility has reported a marked increase in productivity.

In international news, the Brazilian water utility Águas de Matão will implement advanced metering technology from Itron to help curb water loss.

Facing non-revenue water levels of up to 50 percent, the utility will be able to use detailed meter data to better account for water usage and improve water efficiency.

The system will be able to collect and process advanced data and generate insights from across the utility’s distribution network through an online, cloud-based interface that integrates with the utility’s billing system.

For WaterWorld magazine, I'm Angela Godwin. Thanks for watching.
