SHANGHAI, China, Sept. 15, 2004 -- Wallingford Software, a developer of hydraulic modeling and network data management software for the worldwide water industry, today announced that InfoWorks CS, the hydraulic modeling solution for urban drainage, was selected as the modeling platform for a major sewer project in the Chinese provincial city of Hangzhou.
Hangzhou City is the capital of Zhejiang province, located on the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in southeast China, 180 kilometers from Shanghai. Recently expanded to encompass the neighboring counties and cities into one large city area, Hangzhou covers a total area of 16,596 square kilometers with a population of 3.7 million. This includes 683 square kilometers of urban city with a population of 1.69 million people.
Undertaken by the Hangzhou City Planning & Design Institute this major new sewer project, due for completion later this year, is designed to ensure the delivery of high quality wastewater services to the city and to better manage the combined wastewater management system.
The project has five key objectives:
1. Review the capacities of each individual drainage system within the network
2. Identify any network weaknesses within each area
3. Identify spare capacity within the network
4. Optimize the existing system
5. Identify key strategies for future wastewater system development
Using the latest version of InfoWorks CS (v5.5), Wallingford Software's hydraulic modeling platform for urban drainage, the project team has to date built six integrated sub-models with a total of 6,000 pipes.
The choice of InfoWorks reflected the key concerns of the client. Mr Xu Chenghua, chief engineer if the Hangzhou City Planning & Design Institute explains, "This type of master planning project requires a modeling environment that can model the whole pipe network at a detailed level
"InfoWorks is very capable of achieving this. It is a proven and mature product with advanced functionality in key areas such as model build, data and model management, workgroup functions and data import capabilities. InfoWorks also impressed the team with the variety of ways in which simulation results can be viewed and analyzed. Of considerable importance though is the fact that InfoWorks is well established in Hong Kong, China and that a fully functional Chinese language version of the product is available."
To speed the model build time and ensure consistency between the new models and existing network data, full advantage has been made of InfoWorks' Open Data Import Center, which offers the ability to import a variety of file formats, such as CAD files, quickly and accurately.
Modeling team leader Mr. Feng Yijun reports the project is still ongoing:
"With the base models built, the project is currently at the stage where the team is collecting calibration data. The model will then be used to evaluate the existing systems and from there recommended improvements can be made."
