COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 26, 2004 -- Colorado Springs is building a 20-mgd wastewater treatment plant in the center of town. In this locale, not only must the plant be aesthetically pleasing, but it must also have the best in odor control technology.

To meet its needs, the city is installing three LO/PRO( systems and two carbon adsorbers, manufactured by USFilter RJ Environmental Products, Poway, Calif. The odor control treatment system will include a multi-pass chemical scrubber followed by a carbon adsorption secondary polishing stage.

Each LO/PRO wet chemical scrubbers is designed for 17,150 cfm. The carbon adsorbers are designed for 60,000 cfm each. The city intends to operate two duty units and one complete system in standby mode.

The primary focus of the odor control system will be to reliably and efficiently treat plant emissions to avoid any off-site odor impact. The overall odor control strategy is to minimize odor production and then enclose or cover all odor sources and effectively capture and treat odors with reliable and amply sized systems. The plant design minimizes hydraulic jumps and other conditions that would otherwise promote the release of volatile odor-causing compounds.

According to Dennis Auge, project manager, Colorado Springs Utilities, the city evaluated several different systems for the Northern Water Reclamation Facility project. Height was a concern due to the covered design of the plant. The USFilter systems offer a unique footprint and are not very tall.

The project, designed by Brown & Caldwell, Golden, Colo., will cost $68 million and two years to complete.

Millions of people and thousands of companies rely on USFilter every day to help them meet their clean water needs. Headquartered in Palm Desert, Calif., USFilter (www.usfilter.com) is a $1 billion water company with 6,000 experienced professionals dedicated to delivering cost-effective, reliable water and wastewater treatment systems and services to municipal, industrial, commercial and institutional customers worldwide.
