Ed Kobylinski has had a varied career working for both industrial and municipal clients. Over the last 38 years he has been involved in primarily water and wastewater treatment projects but has also been involved with toxicity studies, water quality studies, pilot bench-scale and full-scale treatability studies, plant start-ups, process training and process troubleshooting. Ed has authored over 100 articles for publication and was a contributing author for the WEF Manual of Practice on BNR Operations and in rewriting White’s Handbook of Chlorination and Alternative Disinfectants.
As a Chemical Engineer, Ed has designed many physical/chemical treatment systems for industry as well as biological treatment systems, both anaerobic and aerobic systems, for industrial and municipal clients. Ed’s work with industry introduced him to water conservation and reuse. His experience with internal water conservation and recycling naturally led to looking outside of the industry for water reuse opportunities. Ed has evaluated and implemented municipal/industrial wastewater recycling projects for a number of clients. For Mankato, MN, it was effluent chemical precipitation of phosphorus, disc filtration and advanced disinfection to produce a reclaim water quality for use at a power plant. At the Carson, CA, West basin Facility it was microfiltration followed by RO and BAF treatment and disinfection of the MF reject water for boiler water and cooling tower make-up at an oil refinery.
Ed has investigated and assisted in writing the WateReuse Guidance Manual on the “Impact of Membrane Process Residuals on Wastewater Treatment”. He has developed comprehensive mass balances tracking the build-up of salts and non-biodegradable material in reclaimed water systems. In Oklahoma City, his work on the mass balance of a reclaimed water system helped the City to develop a salt control policy to protect the quality of the WWTP effluent both for discharge to the river and as a source of reclaimed water for industry.
