AUSTIN, TX, March 16, 2006 -- Suncor Energy Inc. and Emerson Process Management, a business of Emerson, announced Feb. 20 a seven-year agreement that names Emerson as Suncor's supplier for automation products, solutions, and services for capital projects at new and existing North American facilities.
Suncor Energy is a growing integrated energy company strategically focused on developing Canada's Athabasca oil sands. The company's oil sands operations, located near Fort McMurray, Alberta, are supported by businesses that provide exploration and production of natural gas and renewable energy, energy marketing and refining. Suncor's growth plans target production capacity of 500,000 to 550,000 barrels per day in 2010 to 2012.
In 1967, Suncor made history by pioneering commercial crude oil production from oil sands in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta. Since then, Suncor has become a major North American energy producer and marketer.
Suncor's refining operations add value to the company's integrated strategy of processing oil sands products into the high quality refined products that consumers demand.
Suncor plans to extensively deploy Emerson's PlantWeb digital automation technology to build "smart" world class facilities. The agreement also provides opportunities for Emerson to work in collaboration with Suncor, and engineering- procurement - construction (EPC) contractors to support application engineering, project management, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance and operations.
"We are extremely pleased with this opportunity to deliver incremental value by applying our automation engineering expertise and PlantWeb digital plant architecture to Suncor's complete range of projects," commented John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "I'm confident that the team of Suncor, Emerson and EPC personnel will excel in building and automating facilities that realize project savings, and exhibit leading edge operations efficiency, reliability and safety."
"This agreement is especially rewarding as it represents a further opportunity for Emerson and Spartan to work with an oil sands leader like Suncor to deliver another step up in successful project execution and life cycle value from leading automation technology and innovative approaches," added Mike Begin, president of Spartan Controls, Emerson's local business partner. "Suncor is one of the most progressive and well run companies in the world, and we are committed to their successful growth."
Emerson's PlantWeb is an innovative digital automation approach that networks operations, maintenance, and management stations with computers and intelligent instruments, valves, and equipment throughout facilities. Communications between these components, and with personnel, enable facilities that provide high throughput and reliability. The built-in intelligence continuously monitors processes and the equipment itself, providing predictive reports and alerts that enable personnel to operate at highest capacity and resolve maintenance issues before they impact production.
Emerson's intelligent digital automation systems, field devices, and equipment monitors cover the plant to power PlantWeb; included are the DeltaV™ automation system, Smart Rosemount® transmitters, Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters, Rosemount Analytical sensors and analyzers, Fisher® FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers and Fisher valves, and Machinery Health™ Management technologies.
