Canadian pharmaceutical expansion requires USP purified water system

WARRENDALE, PA, Feb. 9, 2006 -- Novocol Pharmaceutical of Canada needed a new water system for a plant expansion, since they were increasing production of a dental anesthetic, and required an additional 13 gallons per minute of water. The system had to be of a cGMP design and meet USP quality requirements.
Novocol selected USFilter's PreVUE™ system because of its integrated and automated design. Says Novocol's engineering manager Michel Ferron, "We liked the idea of having everything on one skid. The decisive factor was the validation documentation package. The system includes a FDS, FAT, material and instrument certificates, videoboroscoping, IQ and OQ. The large-screen HMI with its multiple functions was a big hit with the maintenance team. Another factor in our decision was the reputation of this vendor in the water industry."
City water is warmed with a heat exchanger and then softened. Bisulfite is injected into the water to remove chlorine and the pH is adjusted to reduce the carbon dioxide. The water is fed to a hot-water-sanitizable break tank, then to a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The RO product water is polished with the CDI-LX™ system and then fed to a purified water storage tank. The USP Purified Water is distributed to the points of use in Novocol's plant.
