LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MEMS USA Inc. has been contracted to provide full technical support for the maintenance, upgrade, refurbishment and training of a fuel-pool Intelligent Filtration System in a nuclear electric power generation plant located on the U.S. East Coast.

Daniel Moscaritolo, MEMS USA COO and chief technical officer, said, "Our engineering team will be onsite Sept. 21 to begin the required maintenance, upgrade, refurbishment and training of our first contract with this client."

The company is a developer and manufacturer of advanced engineered products and services for the oil, natural gas and power generation industries. Its core technologies are acousto-electronic sensors, fluid metering and blending systems and eco-friendly, reusable particle removal fluid purification systems.

On May 21, MEMS USA became a worldwide provider of backflushable Intelligent Filtration Systems (IFS), acquiring the ability to maintain, refurbish and upgrade all pre-existing Vacco Industries and PTI Technologies IFS systems built prior to that date. These IFS systems filter process fluids including water, amine, oil and petrochemicals using permanent filter elements that eliminate the need for filter element disposal.

The Vacco filter systems have seen decades of reliable, continuous use in nuclear power plants, refineries and petrochemical plants. Since the early 1970s, 51 IFS systems have been installed in nuclear electric power generation plants domestically and abroad. These unique systems were engineered primarily to remove radioactive particles from high purity water in "fuel pools." It's difficult for the nuclear industry, because of regulatory constraints, to displace or substitute any part of these systems with other than the authentic original parts produced by Vacco Industries and PTI Technologies that are now available from MEMS USA.

Commenting further on the value of this business line to MEMS USA, Daniel stated, "As these 51 systems age, there is a high probability of them requiring maintenance, upgrades and refurbishment over the coming years. Maintenance can range from $25,000 to $150,000 and refurbishing can range from $150,000 to over $500,000 depending on the extent of the services required."

MEMS USA Inc. is a California-based professional scientific and technical services company.
