CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu, India, Oct. 23, 2009 -- The annual contest, spear-headed by Henkel India since 2005 has received wide acclaim. This year "Henkel Eco-petition" will address water issues, which is the need of the hour. Titled "Proper channelization of water resources," the competition is open to school students. The competition will see students of class 9,10,11 & 12 participating from across cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Luck now, Ahmedabad and Kolkata putting their pens to paper and scripting their thoughts on the future of water.

The earth often referred to as the "Blue Planet," consists of more than 70% of water. Yet this resource remains the most scarce and precious of resources that we have to conserve and preserve to sustain life on earth. Droughts, floods, lack of rainfall, polluted water systems, shortage of clean drinking water seems to be issues faced by people all around the world. With so much of water available the challenge that is put forth through eco-petition is to think of a solution how best can we channelize and use the available water bodies so that water problems across the world can be combated.

"Henkel Eco-petition aims to get young minds to bring solutions on how best we can channelize, maintain and replenish the available water resources. Henkel's research and development teams worldwide are continuously working towards developing advanced technologies for resource-conserving use of water through constantly improved processes and product performance," says Mr. Jayant Singh, Managing Director, Henkel India Limited.

Participants in Henkel Eco-Petition 2009 will need to write a paper in not more than 2,500 words on the topic. The selected students will be invited to take part in the finals, which will be held over Video conferencing with a live discussion in the presence of judges. The award carries a gift prize of Rs. 10,000/- for the first place, Rs. 7,500/- for the second place and Rs. 5,000/- for the third place. The last date for the submission of entries is November 12th 2009 and the entries will have to be sent to Henkel.Ecopetition@in.henkel.com.

"Every step is taken by our company to reduce the amount of water used to produce our products, recycling water used for manufacturing processes so it can be returned safely to the environment, and replenishing water in communities and nature through locally relevant projects." added Mr. Jayant Singh, Managing Director, Henkel India Limited.

In product and process design, Henkel's mandate is to use as little water as possible, and also to re-use existing supplies. In application, its products consume as little water as possible, at the same time limiting their environmental impact. Henkel's detergents, household cleaners, cosmetics and toiletries, which end up in wastewater, are designed to have a minimal impact on surface waters. Also, in its detergents Henkel uses zeolites which makes possible the formulation of high-performance, low-cost, environmentally friendly detergents that are phosphate-free. In Karaikal, Henkel produces dishwashing detergents, glass cleaners and laundry detergents. Wastewater from production processes are segregated / recycled back to the production process. Wastewater from sanitation facilities is also treated and used for gardening.
