Germany, Feb. 3, 2009 -- Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has been awarded a large-scale contract for a wastewater treatment plant by Dunapack in Hungary. The project will be executed by Organica-VWS, Hungary, and Biothane Systems International in The Netherlands, both subsidiaries of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. Dunapack is one of the key players of the Hungarian pulp and paper industry. At its site Dunaújváros, 70 km south of Budapest, the manufacturer of quality paper products has been extending its paper production capacity by 350,000 tons per year, so that the company will almost triple the previous capacity of 200,000 tons. Increasing the production volume makes it necessary to adapt the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant.

The scope of the project is to extend the existing aerobic treatment line with an anaerobic system with a capacity of 60 t/d COD and 15,000 m³/d (625 m³/h). For that, Biothane will supply two Biobed EGSB Reactors (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed). Biobed is an energy efficient anaerobic wastewater treatment process, already frequently installed mostly in the pulp and paper as well as food and beverage industry. The Biobed EGSB treats wastewater with ultra high organic loading and requires an extremely small footprint. It generates energy-rich methane that can be used to cover a good percentage of the plant's energy requirements. The commissioning of the expanded water treatment plant is scheduled for June 2009.

Organica-VWS and Biothane are part of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (VWS), a subsidiary of Veolia Water and one of the leading suppliers of technical solutions for treating water and wastewater. With more than 7,700 employees in 55 countries, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies in 2007 achieved a turnover of €2.1 billion in 2007. Veolia Water is the water division of Veolia Environnement, the world market leader in the environmental services sector.
