LOUISVILLE, KY, Jan. 28, 2010 -- To help bring disaster relief to Haiti, which has been devastated by a recent earthquake, ISCO Industries, a Louisville, Ky.-based manufacturer and distributor of piping products, today donated $10,000 to EDGE Outreach, a non-profit organization also based in Louisville that provides clean water globally to those in need.
According to Edge Outreach, the $10,000 can provide two water-purification systems that once running can provide water for up to 20,000 people per day. EDGE Outreach members have already installed their first three water-purification systems in Haiti and hope to install up to nine more.
"The goal of providing quality drinking water to people in need is of global importance, but it is also especially meaningful to ISCO because a core part of our business involves keeping drinking water safe and protecting the environment," said ISCO Chief Executive Officer Jimmy Kirchdorfer. "It is easy for us to see value in the work Edge Outreach is doing."
Since the January 12 earthquake hit, there have been approximately 150,000 deaths and more are still unaccounted for, possibly trapped under rubble. In addition, there have been 50 additional aftershocks reported, one registering at a 4.7 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The initial earthquake registered at a 7.0 magnitude. In addition to the immediate needs of those affected by the disaster, Haiti needs aid to help rebuild its infrastructure, including the water system.
