A BB solutions are making a significant contribution to the world's largest seawater desalination plant – Magtaa in Algeria – and to the award–winning Changi Water Reclamation Plant in Singapore.

Magtaa, which is scheduled for completion in 2011, will use seawater reverse osmosis to produce up to 500,000 cubic meters of drinking water a day, sufficient to meet the daily requirements of about five million people. ABB is providing a complete electrical solution for the entire desalination plant, including a 220kV outdoor substation to connect the facility to the Algerian power grid and ensure it receives a reliable supply of electricity.

The solution includes 33 ABB medium–voltage drives, which will not only reduce pump energy consumption and plant power losses down to a uniquely low level but also reduce mechanical stress on the pumps and electrical stress on the motors.

Singapore's used–water superhighway

Widely regarded as one of the world's most innovative and visionary water projects, the Changi Water Reclamation Plant and Deep Tunnel Sewerage System in Singapore is designed to collect, treat and purify every drop of used water produced by the city–state over the next 100 years.

The water is conveyed through a 48–kilometer tunnel to the change Water Reclamation Plant, where it is treated and the effluent discharged out to sea or purified into drinking water. The plant treats up to 800,000 cubic meters of used water a day. ABB played a prominent role in the project, supplying a complete electrical solution for the huge influent pumping station, where the water is pumped vertically from the tunnel to the reclamation plant.

In fact, throughout the entire water treatment process at Changi, ABB products and systems are powering, monitoring, measuring and speed–controlling crucial process equipment in the liquid and solids treatment modules, sludge drying systems, centrifuges and turbine generators, and effluent pumping station.
