Water purification products
The new Thermo Scientific Waterbook showcases the diverse portfolio of Thermo Scientific laboratory water purification products. The 76-page Waterbook includes a comprehensive introduction to lab water impurities and purification technologies, as well as a section devoted to helping customers identify purification products uniquely designed to support their specific scientific application needs. System specifications and features are outlined in simple-to-read "quick look" comparison tables. Product information is structured for easy identification of system options and either required or optional accessories. A Green section highlights smart system designs, and a support and maintenance section explains validation and calibration options.

Trace metal analyzers
TraceDetect has introduced its SafeGuard™ III automated trace metal analyzers for the drinking water and wastewater industries. The analyzers can be used to monitor for arsenic, selenium, lead, copper, chromium, nickel, cobalt, iron, aluminum, uranium, vanadium, zinc, and others. They provide accurate, real-time measurement of contaminant levels down to 1 ppb. The analyzers can lower operating costs and improve quality control by optimizing coagulant levels. TraceDetect's online and at line arsenic and trace metal analyzers incorporate the company's "Chemist in the Box"™ technology, which handles trace metal measurement from start to finish: sample preparation, dilution, mixing, measuring, and calibration. Operator variability is virtually eliminated with automated sampling and auto-calibration. TraceDetect,www.tracedetect.com.
SciTOX has shipped the first commercial orders for its Alpha toxicity analyzer, which was released in April 2009. The Rapid Toxicity Measurement Systems (RTMS) provide wastewater customers with an early warning of potential upsets to their treatment systems, reducing the risk of non-compliant discharges and higher operating costs. The toxic response measured by the analyzers applies to organic and inorganic toxins. The Alpha, and future platforms marketed by SciTOX, will be employed in laboratories, in-process, and in field applications.SciTOX Limited,Christchurch, New Zealand, www.scitox.com.
Charm Sciences has launched Fast Phage, a quick way to screen for coliphage in water. The system provides positive prediction within 8 hours and coliphage plaque confirmation at 16 hours – enabling a same-day public health response to contaminated drinking water. Fast Phage includes single-dose ready-to-use reagents, making the test simple and convenient to perform. Test kits are available for male-specific (F+) and somatic coliphage. The test is a simplified modification of EPA Method 1601, an approved coliphage detection method specified in the Ground Water Rule. Its 16-hour plaque result is equivalent to Method 1601 according to performance criteria defined in the method. The test features a rapid and easy-to-read fluorescence prediction step. The same-day fluorescent feature is predictive of the 16-hour result in external lab evaluations.

Refrigerated sampler cabinets
Hach's Sigma All-Weather Refrigerated Sampler has a robust design that ensures operation in the face of environmental challenges, maintains accurate temperature control, protects sample quality, and provides security in remote operation. The unique top-mounted compressor is located away from any standing water, rodents and heavy corrosive gases typically found at floor level. Additionally, the compressor's heat dissipates into the air, not into the sample compartment, preserving testing quality and reducing wear and tear on the refrigeration system. The sampler has a thermal microprocessor control system. The insulated lid protects the controller, pump and pump tubing from the elements. For extreme applications, a factory installed controller compartment heater keeps the sampler performing optimally when in temperatures from –40 to 120ºF.

Turbidity, chlorine meter
The LTC-3000 is a benchtop turbidity/chlorine meter that meets EPA 180.1 for turbidity and EPA 330.5 for chlorine. The turbidity range is 0-4,000 NTU with a MDL of 0.05 NTU. The Free and Total chlorine range is 0-10 ppm with a MDL of 0.02 ppm. The meter can store 4,000 data points which can be downloaded to a computer or printer, allows six different languages, and employs a universal AC adapter for worldwide use.

The new AA-7000 Series atomic absorption spectrophotometer from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments incorporates recently developed 3-D optics for enhanced flame and furnace analysis. The spectrophotometer's 3-D optical system is capable of producing maximum performance for both flame detection (Pb 0.015 ppm) and furnace detection (Pb 0.00005 ppm). This is achieved through optimal adjustment of the light beam and digital filter, and by using optical components that restrict light loss. With a new graphite furnace design, the series has achieved improved lower limits of detection for furnace analysis in all fields, as compared to Shimadzu's previous series designs.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted nationwide approval to three In-Situ® RDO® optical dissolved oxygen methods under the Alternate Test Procedure (ATP) process. The methods are the only optical- or luminescence-based DO methods to pass the ATP approval process for measuring BOD, CBOD and DO under the Clean Water Act. Ten federal- or state-certified laboratories tested over 1,300 samples in nine water and wastewater sample matrices, including municipal and industrial wastewater, surface water, drinking water and other categories. No significant matrix interferences were observed in any of the 1,300 samples tested.

ABB Instrumentation has introduced the Aztec 600 Manganese online analytical analyzer for potable water treatment. Built on the company's new analytical instrument platform, the colorimetric monitor offers enhanced accuracy with simple operation and maintenance. It uses an LED and detector to measure the passage of light through a sample. A single piston pump provides all the sample and reagent fluid handling for measurement, mixing and disposal. Measurements are taken before and after color reagents are added to compensate for background color and turbidity. These measurements are compared against the calibrated values to calculate the sample being measured. The analyzer can measure up to six samples per hour.
