The EPA awarded $900,000 to four companies for development and commercialization of nanomaterials and environmentally clean technologies through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Among recipients is Intelligent Optical Systems Inc., of Torrance, CA, which will adapt immunoassays – highly sensitive biological laboratory tests – to develop field monitors that test for organic pollutants in water supplies and food processing.

Dublin, Ireland's Research and Markets, an international market data and research firm, added a third edition of its Specialty Chemicals Source Book to its offering. The overview of the $400 billion global industry focuses on development of chemicals and materials in terms of market value and how they serve end-user markets. This new edition is extensively revised and now contains about 15,000 chemical monographs, 48,000 chemical synonyms and 53,000 trade name equivalents.
