IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 24, 2003 -- The Keith Cos., Inc., an engineering and consulting services firm, has been awarded a contract by The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) to provide Infrastructure Design services for the Diamond Valley Lake East Recreational Project in Riverside County, California.

The fee for this contract is $900,000, and includes final engineering design and construction support services for major infrastructure including drainage, water, sewer and roadway improvements for the project.

The project consists of developing an array of public recreation facilities including a trail system, a water history museum, and fishing facilities at the east end of the lake.

Diamond Valley Lake is located between the cities of Temecula and Hemet, and is the largest body of fresh water in Southern California constructed by The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

The reservoir holds 800,000 acre-feet, or 269 billion gallons of water and nearly doubles the geographic area's surface reservoir capacity, providing drought protection, emergency reserves and seasonal regulation. The facility secures six months of emergency storage in the event of a major earthquake.

Sources of water delivered to the reservoir are through the Colorado River Aqueduct and the California State Water Project from Lake Silverwood. MWD is now beginning to implement its program of recreational uses to complement the Project's water storage use.
