Drinking water, wastewater systems in Mo. get $18.7M in Recovery Act funds for improvements

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, Feb. 19, 2010 -- Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon today announced the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded eight communities throughout Missouri with $18.7 million in grants and loans for wastewater and drinking water improvements funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The Recovery Act provides significant funding to assist communities with infrastructure needs for water quality, wastewater and drinking water. A portion of the funding will be targeted toward green infrastructure, water and energy efficiency and environmentally innovative projects. This infusion of grant and loan funding will help the village protect its citizens and the environment by making necessary drinking water improvements.
The communities receiving funding, the amounts and nature of the funding (grants or loans), description of the project and expected completion date are listed below:
• Joplin, Jasper County -- A $3 million grant and a $6 million loan to construct wastewater treatment facility improvements at its Turkey Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project is estimated to cost $9 million.
• California, Moniteau County -- A $2,708,100 grant and a $2,708,000 loan to install new gravity sewers, force main sewers, a pump station, decommission two lagoon cells, and wastewater treatment plant modifications. The project is estimated to cost $5,506,212.
• Wardsville, Cole County -- A $396,862 grant and a $396,700 loan to go towards a nearly $1.3 million project for drinking water improvements. A Rural Water Grant of $477,000 will provide matching funds to pay for the project.
• Fremont Hills, Christian County -- A $34,903 grant to construct gravity sewer lines, manholes, and an associated highway bore. The total estimated project cost is $69,806.
• Carterville, Jasper County -- A $702,950 grant to replace the city's existing lift station. The project is estimated to cost $1,406,900.
• Lake Ozark, Miller County -- A $444,200 grant and a $244,200 loan to finance the installation of alarm dialers and remote monitoring equipment on all pump stations with 3,000 gallons per day capacity or more. The project is estimated to cost $888,400.
• Cassville, Barry County -- A $551,098 grant to eliminate existing failing on-site treatment systems by installing a centralized sanitary sewer collection system. The project is estimated to cost $1,102,196.
• Ste. Genevieve, Ste. Genevieve County -- A $781,440 grant and a $781,300 loan for water treatment plant and distribution system improvements. The project is estimated to cost $1,562,740. The city will provide matching funds to pay for the project.
The Department of Natural Resources' Water Protection Program will administer the grant and loan funds. The department is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings.
