WIFIA program issues fifth loan to City of San Diego

Nov. 30, 2018
This loan will bring EPA's total over $1.5 billion in WIFIA credit assistance.

SAN DIEGO, CA, NOV 30, 2018 -- The City of San Diego's $614 million WIFIA program loan will construct a new advanced treatment facility to produce 30 million gallons per day (mgd) of purified water. This is the first phase in its multi-year Pure Water Program which will use proven technology to clean non-potable recycled water into safe, high quality, drinking water. This project will provide a reliable, sustainable water supply, reduce the need for imported water, and divert wastewater flows away from the Point Loma ocean discharge plant. The City expects to save up to $151 million by financing the project with a WIFIA loan and create 480 jobs.

According to the project factsheet, the construction project will include a pump station and pipeline to convey wastewater along Morena Boulevard to the North City Water Reclamation Plant, expansion of the existing North City Water Reclamation plant, a new North City Pure Water Facility, an onsite Pure Water pump station and pipeline to convey purified water, and improvements to the existing Miramar Reservoir Pump Station to allow raw water from the reservoir storage area to be pumped to the adjacent existing drinking water treatment plant. This project will provide a reliable, sustainable water supply, reduce the need for imported water, and divert wastewater flows away from the Point Loma ocean discharge plant.
