International Ultraviolet Association names new president

July 12, 2011 -- CH2M HILL's Paul Swaim has been named president of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA). Swaim, elected president in 2009, has been serving as president-elect for the past two years. He officially took office as president at the recent IUVA World Congress in Paris, France.
Swaim has been an active member in IUVA since its inception in 1999, presenting at regional conferences and several World Congresses. He has been on the IUVA Board of Directors since 2007, and he served as Strategic Initiative Leader in 2009 and 2010. Swaim will serve as the organization's president for two years.
Swaim has worked for CH2M HILL for 12 years and currently serves as Vice President, Senior Principal Technologist, and Global Technology Leader for Water Treatment. He is recognized internationally as an expert in UV disinfection for drinking water, water reuse, and wastewater applications. His expertise extends to water treatment process selection, treatability (bench and pilot scale) testing, granular activated carbon (GAC) applications, disinfection, and advanced oxidation.
"This is an exciting time for the IUVA," says Swaim. "Many positive changes are in store in the next few months. We have a new Executive Director and new Regional Hub Directors to serve the needs of the IUVA and to expand what we can accomplish. My focus areas will be to continue our platform of strategic initiatives, revamp our webpage, increase our membership, and add to the value of IUVA membership. I plan to work with our team to increase the number of activities organized by the IUVA and expand our presence as the place to go for UV information."
The IUVA, headquartered in Washington, D.C., was founded in 1999 and now has over 500 members in 35 countries, including leading experts among utilities, regulators, academicians, consulting engineers, and manufacturers. Their mission is to advance the science, engineering, and applications of ultraviolet technologies to enhance the quality of human life and to protect the environment.
