Environmental investigators stumped by slimy goo on beaches

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the cause of a mysterious foamy substance which is washing up on beaches in the Florida Panhandle, UPI reported.

Feb. 13, 2001—The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the cause of a mysterious foamy substance which is washing up on beaches in the Florida Panhandle, UPI reported.

The Florida DEP has asked for the Environmental Protection Agency on identifying the substance, which does not appear to be harmful but has defied conventional testing methods.

The substance, which dries to form a dark crust, is washing up on beaches from Alabama to Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
