FORT WASHINGTON, PA, Oct. 19, 2004 -- Severn Trent Services announced that it began providing contract operations on Sept. 1 at the 2,200-acre Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, N.Y. Registered on June 30, the eight-year contract awarded operations, maintenance and facilities management of the landfill's leachate control system to Severn Trent. The contract is valued at $65 million.

The leachate control system is capable of treating up to one million gallons per day utilizing a combination of biological and chemical treatment. Severn Trent is also providing professional engineering, design and construction management services for facility upgrades and asset repairs, and daily removal, transportation and disposal of landfill gas condensate generated from the landfill's gas collection system.

"As the largest closed Subtitle D landfill in the country, Fresh Kills will provide our company the ultimate opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to environmental and safety excellence.
