Emerson's Field Communicator first handheld to pass Fieldbus host interoperability test

AUSTIN, TX, April 3, 2006 -- Emerson Process Management has received notice that its 375 Field Communicator successfully completed the Fieldbus Foundation's Host Interoperability Support Test (HIST).
By its success, the 375 Field Communicator becomes the first, and currently the only handheld communicator on the list of HIST tested & compliant host systems. Sixteen hosts, including the 375, have successfully passed testing to date. The unit is also the only available intrinsically safe handheld communicator that universally supports FOUNDATION™ fieldbus and HART® devices from all suppliers. Universal support is a primary requirement of process manufacturing users. It's also a key component of Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture.
HIST results demonstrate which features defined in the Fieldbus Foundation's host feature checklist are supported by a compliant host system. This comprehensive test program ensures that a supplier's host system incorporates FOUNDATION fieldbus' robust functionality, and that it accurately communicates with any of the hundreds of registered FOUNDATION fieldbus devices. The Fieldbus Foundation is the only industry organization that facilitates such a comprehensive host-testing system.
"End-users benefit from the wide availability of rigorously tested host systems," commented Richard Timoney, president and CEO of the Fieldbus Foundation. "The list of HIST compliant hosts continues to grow, providing users with the 'freedom to choose' when developing plant automation strategies."
The Fieldbus Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation consisting of over 350 leading process and manufacturing automation companies worldwide whose major purpose is to provide an open and neutral environment for the development of a single, international, interoperable fieldbus.
