FORT WASHINGTON, PA, Oct. 31, 2007 -- Severn Trent Services has provided a reverse osmosis/electrodeionization (RO/EDI) system for a Sharp Electronics flat screen plasma TV manufacturing plant in Baja, Calif. The system was commissioned in June 2007 and is being used to purify manufacturing process wastewater at a rate of 77 gallons per minute.

The RO/EDI system includes a UAT™ reverse osmosis membrane filtration system; an EDI module; and multi-media, granular activated carbon and water softener for pre-treatment filtration. The pre-treatment filtration system is used to effectively remove sediment, chlorine, chloramines, calcium and magnesium and reduce turbidity.

RO/EDI systems combine multiple technologies to consistently produce very high water quality. The first step is reverse osmosis, which involves passing water across an ultra-thin membrane at high pressure. Reverse osmosis can effectively remove more than 97% of all feedwater contaminants, including ionic, organic and particulate contamination.

The second stage is electrodeionization, which utilizes a spiral wound membrane and ion exchange resins. The EDI technology polishes reverse osmosis permeate and removes charged contaminants -- mostly ions -- generating pure or ultra-pure water. The process is chemical free, eliminating the need to store and handle chemicals typically used for resin generation, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.
