Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings group has many product offerings for the water/wastewater treatment industry, including Tank Clad™ HS, which is certified for tanks 60,000 gallons and larger. Along with meeting the toxicological and extraction test requirements of ANSI/NSF Standard 61, the protective coating complies with EPA standards for VOC emissions. It was developed with low molecular weight polymers capable of greater crosslink density. In addition to requiring less solvent for superior flow and leveling, the polymers produce more chemically and corrosion resistant finishes. Accelerated immersion and disbondment tests revealed that the coatings form strong bonds to numerous substrates, including steel and concrete, and are compatible with both impressed current and galvanic protection systems.
New, cylindrical double-wall tanks from Assmann Corp. eliminate chemical spills and prevent dome collapse without the expense of lined concrete containment. The company's molding process provides a heavier-top sidewall and dome to prevent dome collapse, while the primary inner tank and a secondary locked-on outer tank ensures against chemical spills. The portable tanks provide a small footprint and are available in sizes ranging from 550 to 6550 US gallons.
To meet the standards of the Chemical Industry, Design Tanks uses two different methods of manufacturing FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) tanks. On the smaller diameters, 24 in. through 90 in., the company incorporates the centrifugal cast, spincast method and on the larger tanks, 8 ft. through the new 14 ft. diameter, it uses the chop-hoop filament wound method of fabrication. The tanks feature UV absorbers to eliminate sunlight issues. A freeze protection package is available.

The Graco Xtreme™ Mix proportioner overcomes barriers to employing a ratio-accurate proportioner for spraying coatings on tanks and structures in industrial water applications. Smaller and lighter than current plural component systems, it is priced as much as 30 percent less than comparative options. The unit makes proportioning an accessible alternative to hand-mixing. By only mixing the amount of material you need, the proportioner can reduce material waste by up to 25 percent.
Custom tanks, vessels
Ershigs, a Plasticon Fluid Systems company, specializes in site-fabricated seamless custom tanks and vessels up to 100 feet or more in diameter. Using fiberglass-reinforced plastic, these structures can be constructed with double-wall and double-bottom configurations. The company manufactures not only vessels for storage and processing, but also duct systems, valves, process and effluent piping, washer and ventilation hoods, stacks and chimney liners, scrubbers, and spray header piping and assemblies. It also provides mobile manufacturing units for on-site construction and field crews for maintenance.

The Moyno® 2000 Progressing Cavity Pump is designed for use in a variety of digester, sludge and conditioning tank transfer applications. The pump's rugged construction makes it ideal for abrasive applications such as waste activated sludge and lime slurry. In addition, the low-shear action of the pump allows it to handle polymers and other shear-sensitive fluids.
GTI's new cover system allows tanks to be securely covered while providing access to the tank's internal components. Ideal for clarifiers, chlorine contact basins, sedimentation tanks, aeration basins, etc., the covers contain odors, capture VOCs, eliminate sunlight penetration, and prevent splashing. The system is a high performance reinforced membrane cover supported on a low-profile aluminum arch frame. The UV protected membrane cover is gas tight, but can be quickly detached and rolled up along the frame. This gives operators access to inspect and maintain internal components. The arch frames can also be removed for complete access to the tank. Optional hatches allow access to valve operators, etc. without retracting the cover. Off-gas removal piping connects directly to the cover system.

For years, the Tideflex® Check Valve has been used on the ends of reservoir overflow pipes to prevent birds, rodents and insects from entering through the pipes and contaminating the water supply. Now, this same technology is being used to protect water from human tampering. Unlike flapgates and metal screens, which can simply be lifted open by bare hands, the Tideflex valve is extremely difficult to open from the outside. For tighter security, the company offers the Tideflex® InLine Check Valve, which is installed inside the pipeline and cannot be accessed or even seen from outside of the tank.

Water storage tanks
Preload Inc. has completed the construction of two 7.5 MG water storage tanks for the City of Oneida, NY. The tanks measure 226 ft. ID x 25 ft. SWD and incorporate an unsupported or clear span dome roof. Built to the AWWA D-110, Type 3 Standard for circular wire-wound prestressed-concrete water tanks, the walls are always in compression despite varying internal hydrostatic loads. This results in a very long service life with no routine maintenance or repainting.
The JetMix Vortex Mixing System offered by Liquid Dynamics Corp. is designed to provide high efficiency mixing of liquids and suspended solids in large storage tank applications. The mixing system is ideal for a wide range of industrial tank mixing applications, including mixing of sludge and biosolids. The simplicity of the system ensures low maintenance and permits intermittent operation on an as needed basis. A pair of floor-mounted nozzles can be rotated 360 degrees, creating a toroidal flow pattern so unique that it is patented.

The tank remains full of water and employs buoyant thermal stratification to store colder, denser, system supply water below warmer, lighter, system return water. The tank can meet fire prevention standards such as NFPA 22 and typical certification agency requirements.

Pressure relief valves
Trumbull Tank Pressure Relief Valves are designed for use in preventing large empty tanks from floating due to an excess of groundwater beneath them. When this condition occurs, the hydrostatic pressure will open the cover of the valve allowing water to enter, thereby equalizing pressure inside and outside the tank and preventing it from floating. Designed for low seating or unseating pressure applications only, they will start to open at less than one foot of head. Floor Type pressure relief valves are cast in the bottom of tanks, while the Wall Type has a flanged base with ANSI 125# STD drilling for use with a wallpipe.

Odor containment covers
Vapor Guard® odor containment covers from ILC Dover are shown installed on two 20 x 100 ft. aeration/EQ tanks at the Exeter Township WWTP in Birdsboro, PA. Installed to contain possible odorous emissions from the tanks, the structural-fabric covers were selected over competing aluminum and fiberglass covers. The covers offers long-term odor containment, removable modular cover sections for tank maintenance, access hatches for observation and sampling, and a flat profile for minimum emission control costs.

Subsurface water storage
Invisible Structures has introduced Rainstore3, a new class of subsurface water storage created to fill a storage niche between structural tanks and reservoirs and buried pipe and arch systems. The system features thin-walled cylindrical columns of injection molded resins made from recycled high impact polypropylene (HIPP), or high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastics. The storage system can be as shallow as 4 in. or as deep as 98 in. Length and width in 40 in. increments allow for modular design flexibility.

The Gamajet EZ8 Tank Cleaner eliminates the need for personnel to enter wet wells or other storage tanks for cleaning purposes. By simply inserting the cleaning unit into the well, its 360 degree fluid-driven impingement cleaning pattern will completely scour the inside. The unit provides high flow capacities in a light and narrow unit that allows for maneuverability. Wet wells can be cleaned in as little as 10 minutes.

Warminster Fiberglass Co. provides custom molded or reinforced fiberglass products, including launder covers for primary clarifiers. Approximately 98 to 99% of odors generated in primary clarifiers are created as the water flows over the weirs and into the effluent trough. The primary function of the launder cover is to contain those gases. A secondary function is to form a ductwork system. Placing one inlet duct and one exhaust duct 180 degrees apart allows evacuation of all gases without leaving any dead air spaces. In circular clarifiers, the covers feature a flow equalization baffle at the inlet to insure the incoming air is distributed equally around each half.

Bolted steel tanks
The Porta Tank™ system combines the durability of bolted steel walls with the chemical resistance of high performance composite membrane liners. The patented design incorporates a high tech synthetic buffer material that prevents damage to the liner by isolating it from irregular surfaces on the tank walls and foundation, limiting the need for a costly concrete foundation. Sizes range from 6,500 to 1.5 million gallons.

Tank Products Co. provides a line of API tank bolts and nuts in 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. diameters with lengths from 1 to 2 1/2 in. These fasteners are available in several different finishes, including unplated or black, hot-dipped galvanized, mechanical galvanized and dichromate dipped. The tank bolts exceed the minimum strength requirements by substantial margins. The company also offers encapsulated nuts of extra strength, heat resistant plastic. The nuts are totally sealed when in place. They are designed to prevent deterioration and toxicity and are made with NSF-61 approved plastic. The company's bonded washers are rubber-backed to prevent scratching of painted or galvanized materials.

The new low profile Ultra-SpillBerm from UltraTech contains leaks and reduces OSHA slip hazards. Made of non-absorbing polyurethane, the 10-foot sections will bend to follow any curve or angle needed. Applications include: containing oil leaks from machinery and equipment, diverting stormwater, sealing areas during washdown, and spill response. Interlocking end joints allow multiple units to be connected together.

Eagle Microsystems offers electronic, load cell type scales. Its LP4300 Precision Low Profile Platform Scale system can be used for weighing containers and tanks weighing up to 20,000 lbs. with platforms up to 72" x 72" x 3" high. The scale uses four sealed stainless steel load cells to weigh either liquids or dry materials with an accuracy of ± 0.1% of full scale. The rugged design permits a safe load up to 200% of rated capacity. In conjunction with the EI-1000 high resolution indicator/transmitter, the system provide direct digital readout as well as sophisticated computations such as amount used, amount remaining, total weight, gross weight and "rate by weight."
