BROOMFIELD, CO, April 28, 2010 -- MWH Soft, a leading global innovator of wet infrastructure modeling and simulation software and technologies, today announced that the City of Lynchburg, Virginia, has chosen industry-leading InfoSWMM software as its advanced sanitary sewer and stormwater modeling and design solution. The decision helps leverage the city's investment in ArcGIS technology from ESRI (Redlands, CA) by giving it the most technologically advanced GIS-centric software platform available for managing and operating its stormwater and wastewater systems.
Lynchburg is a community of 70,000 located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the James River in southwestern Virginia. A survey by the Center for Digital Government has listed it as one of the Top Ten Digital Cities in America since the survey's inception in 2004. Lynchburg's sanitary sewer system dates back to the late 19th century and consists of separated and combined sewer lines. The City has been actively redesigning parts of its system and removing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) since the late 1970s.
"With a price tag of over $400M, our CSO Program is the largest capital program in the City's history," says the city's CSO Program Manager, Jeff Scarano. "Couple this with upcoming water quality regulations for the James River and the Chesapeake Bay that will impact the City, and we see the perfect storm brewing on the horizon. We believe that an accurate, comprehensive, and proven hydraulic model, supported by good data and engineering, will be essential for us to make the most cost-effective decisions in the future. During our selection process of hydraulic modeling software, we were very impressed with InfoSWMM's track record, the local user base, and their on-going development and support of their software. We felt confident that this product would best meet our current needs, and would continue to evolve to support our future needs."
Built atop ArcGIS with native geodatabase support, InfoSWMM offers a single comprehensive, GIS-centric solution for analyzing and managing large and complex urban sewer collections systems. It can be used to model the entire land phase of the hydrologic cycle as applied to urban stormwater and wastewater collection systems. The model can perform single event or long-term (continuous) rainfall-runoff simulations accounting for climate, soil, land use, and topographic conditions of the watershed. In addition to simulating runoff quantity, InfoSWMM can also predict runoff quality, including buildup and washoff of pollutants from primarily urban watersheds. Once runoff quantity and quality are simulated and wastewater loads at receiving junctions are determined, the routing portion of InfoSWMM transports this flow through a conveyance system of pipes, channels, storage/treatment devices, pumps, and hydraulic regulators such as weirs and orifices, using either steady, kinematic wave or dynamic wave routing. The model also offers very advanced Real-Time Control (RTC) schemes for the operational management of hydraulic structures.
"Utilities worldwide are looking for a great user experience that enables them to focus not on mastering the software, but on handling their complex projects and delivering reliable, cost-effective solutions faster without compromise," said, J. Erick Heath, P.E., MWH Soft Vice President and Director of Americas Operations. "We are delighted that the City of Lynchburg has recognized the immense value of InfoSWMM. Their choice is a vivid example of how progressive cities are choosing our highly effective engineering-GIS modeling and design tools to optimize capital planning and raise the bar for infrastructure performance and customer service."
