LA JOLLA, CA, APRIL 21, 2017 -- County health officials closed parts of a popular San Diego beach Thursday after about 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the water.

A stretch of WindanSea Beach about 2,000 feet long was closed Thursday and remained closed Friday while officials collect water samples to determines the area's safety for swimmers and surfers.

A ruptured force main at a pump station next to the beach was the source of the contamination. NBC San Diego reports that the beach could open as early as this weekend, if testing results show the water is clear of toxins.
