The industry’s current issues will take center stage in California later this month as the city of Anaheim hosts the 51st annual Pacific Water Quality Association (PWQA) convention and tradeshow. With the unique challenges currently facing our industry—especially on the West Coast—this event is one not to miss.
Held Oct. 14 to 17 at the Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort (adjacent to Disneyland), the event already has more than 40 registered exhibitors and a full schedule of valuable education seminars lined up. There will also be plenty of networking opportunities throughout the week, from the annual golf tournament on Oct. 15 to the 2008 Banquet Dinner, Industry Awards and Live Auction on Oct. 16.
The unique schedule of this tradeshow—with educational seminars before and after tradeshow hours, not during—allows one not to miss any events due to scheduling conflicts.
Some educational seminars on Thursday, Oct. 16, to consider when planning your itinerary include:
- Residential Arsenic Removal 8:00-9:00 a.m. Mike Barry of AdEdge Technologies will present a history on the development of current maximum contamina- tion levels for arsenic and discuss the best methods of treatment and system design.
- Factors Affecting the Capacity of Arsenic Removal Media, 9:00- 10:00 a.m. Chubb Michaud of Purolite Co. will discuss the importance of a good water analysis by pointing out the usual unknowns that can reduce the capacity and performance of current high-tech media.
- Chlorine & Chloramine Removal Using Activated Carbon, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Ken Schaeffer of Carbon Resources will discuss the mech- anisms of removal as well as the relative differences in proper design for each situation.
- Alternative Water Treatment— A Review, 11:00-12:15 p.m. As possible bans on conventional softeners loom, David Spears and Robert Slovak of Next Filtration will take a look at “alternative” systems, how they are supposed to work and what limitations they may have.
- Orange County Plant No. 21: Toilet to Tap Reality, 4:00- 4:45 p.m. Shivaji Deshmukh of the Orange County Water District will discuss the possibility of our next major source of “new” water being “old” water.
- Point-of-Use Cartridges: Our First & Last Line of Defense, 4:45-5:30 p.m. Shannon Murphy of Watts will present on the use of point-of- use systems as simple as a 10-in. cartridge for safe-guarding our water safety.
- Ultra-High Efficiency Softeners, 5:30-6:00 p.m. An automatic softener currently must be designed to provide 4,000 grains of hardness removal per pound of salt used in regeneration. Chubb Michaud, Systematix Co., will discuss methods of boost- ing the performance to even higher levels by examining the variables that impact capacity.
This year’s PWQA annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. The association has invited Lobbyist Pete Conaty to speak about grassroots efforts and what California’s proposed water softener ban, AB 2270, means to the water treatment industry.
The event will also offer a WQA Water Fundamentals Seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 14, presented by Joseph Harrison, P.E., CWS VI, technical director of the WQA, and WQA certification exams for water dealers. Tradeshow hours run from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 16 and from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 17.
