Transforming Monitoring Methods: A Shift to Total Organic Carbon

Organic compounds are a significant portion of wastewater contamination and have been monitored for over a century. Globally, the most common analysis technique to measure organic levels is BOD. As technology has evolved, regulations are allowing for other methods such as COD and TOC for the analysis of organic contamination. There is a growing trend to shift away from BOD/COD towards TOC for regulatory compliance as well as process control.

This paper will discuss current regulation changes in various countries, options for developing TOC correlations, and new trends in TOC analysis for process control.
