AZUSA, CA, June 13, 2008 -- Jeremiah Johnson is the recipient of Rain Bird's 2008 Intelligent Use of Water™ (IUOW) Scholarship.

Rain Bird Corporation established the $2,500 Intelligent Use of Water Scholarship to recognize an outstanding landscape architecture, horticulture or irrigation science student in the final two years of undergraduate study. In addition to rewarding exemplary scholastic achievement, the scholarship acknowledges those students who have demonstrated commitment to these professions through participation in extracurricular activities.

Johnson, a resident of Muskegon, Mich., graduated from Michigan State University in May 2008 with a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture. He plans to use the IUOW Scholarship as he begins work on his master's degree at Michigan State, with an emphasis on environmental design. Johnson will specialize in the area of green roof technology, application and long-term maintenance. His goal is to start a landscape architecture firm promoting sustainable design.

As one of his many volunteer activities, Johnson donated the design and installation of a landscape plan for an auction. He has also designed and installed landscape plans for two houses to be sold, both projects benefitting his former high school. He is a member of the Michigan State University Landscape Architecture Club and has attended two classes through Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, a non-profit association working to promote the green roof industry in North America. He has worked summers as a landscape architecture employee or intern for several companies.

Rain Bird awards the IUOW Scholarship in partnership with the Landscape Architecture Foundation, an organization dedicated to the professional development of those involved with landscape architecture and its related sciences.

"The IUOW Scholarship is an example of our ongoing commitment to educate future leaders in the landscape industry about the best water conservation methods," said Nancy Roth, Rain Bird's channel relations manager. "By championing these students, we are giving back to the landscape design industry which has supported our company through the years. As professionals, we can find inspiration in the commitment and dedication to water efficiency that these students are demonstrating."

Applications for the 2009-2010 IUOW Scholarship are currently being accepted until Feb. 2009, and a recipient will be announced in April 2009. More information and scholarship application instructions can be found at the Landscape Architecture Foundation Web site, www.laprofession.org
