LONG BEACH, CA, Nov. 18, 2009 -- AECOM is providing environmental engineering support to the Port of Long Beach (POLB) as part of its Green Port Policy and continuing plan to minimize impacts of its operations, and reduce air and water pollution. AECOM is a global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental and energy.

Internationally recognized as one of the most environmentally-friendly ports, POLB is the second-busiest seaport in the United States, and a key transportation hub in the global trade marketplace.

After providing design and permitting assistance and bid phase support during pre-construction, AECOM is currently assisting with engineering support during construction and implementation of long-term stormwater pollution prevention and dust control measures to ensure compliance with state water and regional air quality regulations. The company is also integrating sustainable design elements such as low-irrigation landscaping, low-maintenance bioswales, recycled material use, and construction waste reduction practices for use by POLB.

"Through our stormwater hydrology studies and joint efforts with POLB, we were able to design a cost-efficient, sustainable solution that will reduce water and air pollution," said Marcus Millett, Senior Engineer, Environment. "This project will help POLB manage its growth while adhering to its world-class Green Port Policy."

AECOM's work for POLB complements its other sustainable design projects across the country, including water resource management with the New Jersey Corporate Wetlands Restoration Program, and its award-winning remediation and redevelopment of Bradford Beach, Wisconsin.
